Samba is a term used to describe a particular dance and music from Brazil. We use the term to describe the music we play and dance to but in reality, most European ‘Samba’ bands embrace styles of rhythm and dance from a variety of other cultures as well.

People who play and dance in samba bands are called ‘sambistas’, and the person who leads the band in known as the ‘mestre’. Danny is our mestre (helped out from time to time by Kate from Carnival collective in Brighton)

A ‘Bateria’ is a group made up only of percussionists. The term ‘bloco’ is more generally used to describe a group of musicians and dancers.
